Google/GKE just announced support for image streaming for everything in their artifact registry. This is similar functionality as provided by the containerd stargz remote snapshotter or the cvmfs snapshotter. It uses their own custom snapshotter.
Lightning fast container startup times no matter the image size.
It’s particularly great as it’s rewarding to see all the effort we made for dissemination of this use case in multiple events and to multiple big companies payed off and we have commercial providers embracing it.
A quick timeline would start earlier with docker and cvmfs, but the big industry push might have been from our own workshop back in May 2019:
